The White Lotus director Mike White and his breakout star Sydney Sweeney may soon take their partnership from fictional luxury resorts to a real-world adventure — if the stars align.
While promoting her boxing biopic Christy, Sweeney told Varietythat she’d love to compete on CBS’ globe-trotting hit The Amazing Race — and that she already knows who she’d want as her teammate: Mike White. White, who both created and directed HBO’s Emmy-winning series The White Lotus, has previously raced around the world twice on The Amazing Race (seasons 14 and 18).
“Honestly, Mike and I would be a killer team,” Sweeney said.
White laughed in full agreement:
“I would definitely win with her. She’s the master at getting what she wants. And I mean that in an absolutely good way.”
A Collaboration Fans Already Love
Sweeney became a household name after starring in season 1 of The White Lotus, playing Olivia Mossbacher — sharp-witted, whip-smart, and endlessly judgmental. The Hawaii-set season helped propel Sweeney into international stardom, and White says he saw that energy early:
“There was just something very unaffected by her… She was very likable. And I thought that would be helpful because the part is so unlikable on the page.”
Four years later, Sweeney is now among Hollywood’s most in-demand young stars — prompting White to jokingly wonder whether the show could still “afford” her.
Mike White’s Reality TV Resume
Though best known today for his writing and directing career, White has a deep reality-competition streak.
Amazing Race Season 14 (2009): Teamed with his father, activist Mel White — finished 6th.
Amazing Race Season 18 (2011): Returned for the “Unfinished Business” season — eliminated 2nd.
He has also teased a fun crossover idea for The White Lotus someday:
“If the show goes on… it would be fun to have an all-star season,” hinting that familiar faces could reappear as the resort-hopping series continues.
Would They Actually Compete?
While nothing is confirmed, the mutual enthusiasm — plus Sweeney’s athletic edge from action and sports-driven roles — makes the duo sound like a dream team for fans of both prestige television and competition reality TV.
Sweeney summed up what might make them unstoppable: confidence, charisma, and a shared willingness to dive into unpredictable chaos.
And really — what is The Amazing Race if not a real-life version of the chaos that The White Lotus satirizes?
